you know those places that you’re certain you will get to someday, but you just don’t know when? the nostalgic draw of coney island has been looming for days, months, years!! i had really wanted to experience it with my dear P, but we sadly never got the chance. finally made it there (unplanned) on the busiest of all saturdays…for the mermaid parade no less. i was actually on my way to the opposite end of the city when i bumped into some hot mermaids on the subway. they immediately took me under their flippers and tried to transform me into one of them, slathering me with glitter and gold and enticing me to take my top off. ha! as the story goes, we arrived too late to see all the floats and the king, LOU REED, himself…but i finally got to cash in on the freakshow and clam boob oogling i waited so long for. next time i’m going to try a weekday night.

getting around on my new $80 whip. nothing feels so sweet. nothing quite screams freedom like summer. free to do what i want, when i want, where i want. warm breezy nights and ice cream treats. whizzing past countless bodegas and lots and lots of metal, concrete, old school lamp posts and nostalgic signs of days gone past. streets oozing with character, buzzing with energy, steaming with heat…mad crazy brooklyn flavor.
skate scene on fire.

so i arrive the first night and randomly look into a restaurant window, only to stare into the eyes of none other than infamous skate photographer bryce kanights. small world indeed. i know bryce from SF and turns out the entire west coast skate population has invaded my first official weekend in NY for the maloof money cup. icing on the cake was the book release shindig for “full bleed”…NYC skateboard photography and the KCDC art show. hence, fun parties and shenanigans and people and radness oh my. within a matter of days i’ve been immersed in and schooled on the NY skate scene…and honored with familiar justin strubing smiles; bigger than big. GOOD TIMES!!!

this was out of control….nothing like dumping a 100 olde english 40’s on the floor and/or all over each other. trouble andrew, lil’ jon and a bunch of fun street kids in an underground studio space shooting the new video “wasted”. the crunk girls inspired me to get my nails did…in my own creation. word.
too much to see. too much to do. sleep is no longer an option.
6 floor walk up. as real as it gets. the streets alive with energy, PR & DR families sitting on stoops, hanging out windows, handball, dominoes, blaring music, ice cream trucks and spewing fire hydrants. awesomeness.
the first inkling that i knew brooklyn was in my blood might have been 1987 when i found out about the beastie boys…and that feeling was revisited hardcore when i finally made my first visit in 1997. in that 10 year span, movies like ‘crooklyn’ & ‘kids’ jolted my senses and left deep indents on my soul. maybe too, it was telling that the only guy that ever asked me to marry him was from brooklyn. it is now 2010 and i’m finally ‘here’ here….fresh off the boat!
